book club

with Charlotte Adamis
Sun Feb 11 . noon-1:30pm

Our Winter Book Club book is WHY BUDDHISM IS TRUE The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment by Robert Wright.

From the New York Times book review: Anyone writing (or reading) about Buddhism faces a critical question. What is Buddhism, really? A religion, complete with supernatural deities and reincarnation? A secular philosophy of life? A therapeutic practice? An ideology? All of the above? Robert Wright sketches an answer early in “Why Buddhism Is True.” He settles on a credible blend that one might call Western Buddhism, a largely secular approach to life and its problems but not devoid of a spiritual dimension. The centerpiece of the approach is the practice of mindful meditation.

The goal of “Why Buddhism Is True” is ambitious: to demonstrate “that Buddhism’s diagnosis of the human predicament is fundamentally correct, and that its prescription is deeply valid and urgently important.” It is reasonable to claim that Buddhism, with its focus on suffering, addresses critical aspects of the human predicament. It is also reasonable to suggest that the prescription it offers may be applicable and useful to resolve that predicament.

Read the whole book or just some of it….and come with an open mind and heart.

This is a free event. Sharing a potluck dinner is part of the event. Please bring something vegan or vegetarian for everyone to enjoy.

DAY 1 yoga |

in alignment with the DAY 1 Project

with Micah Blumenthal
TBA

The Day 1 Project provides an alternative to the Us vs. Them paradigm. Day 1 Yoga uses movement and breath, self-inquiry in the form of discussion, and mindfulness practice as a means to explore alternative paradigms and open up to new ways of being in the world. This one and half hour class is divided into 3 equal parts.

  • Part 1 - Movement: through yoga postures and breath we prepare ourselves by opening up

  • Part 2 - Discussion: through the lens of self-inquiry (looking at our mental habits and patterns) we mindfully discuss a particular topic

  • Part 3 - Restorative Yoga: resting in supported yoga postures to further absorb and integrate what we have shared
